A meeting was conducted on 12th October, 2019 at 5.30 pm at Saligao Panchayat compound, to oppose the proposed expansion of the plant, and installation of Plastic Burning incinerators at Saligao Garbage Treatment Plant in the North of GOA.
Over 500 people protested the garbage plant expansion move, and threatened to stage a satyagraha and block garbage trucks from entering Saligao.
I, Sr. Deepika Dsouza, Sister of St. Joseph of Chambery participated in this protest march, along with members of our neighbourhood, to be in solidarity with the people of our village.
Stating that the plant has failed in its operations, a decision was taken to go on a satyagraha and block the roads. If they are going ahead with the expansion, then the people will block the trucks from entering the village. All the people together in unison opposed this expansion. “Let us go out and stop the vehicles, and then only will the government realise”.
The protest calls have awakened the people of the village, and from the next morning, they started stopping the trucks coming from out of Saligao to dump their waste here. It was a move that was practical, and how true goes the saying..”United we stand; divided we fall”
